Repsol promotes the construction of a renewable hydrogen plant in Cartagena with an investment of €215M

Repsol continues to consolidate its commitment to the energy transition in Spain with the promotion of its ambitious renewable hydrogen project in Cartagena. The energy giant has received a €155M grant from the central government to develop its green hydrogen plant, as part of the IPCEI Hy2Use project. This support is part of European efforts to accelerate clean energy production and contribute to meeting the continent’s climate goals.

The renewable hydrogen plant that Repsol plans to build in the Escombreras Valley industrial complex in Cartagena represents one of the largest investments in green infrastructure in our Region. This plant will involve an investment of around 215 million euros and the generation of around 1,100 jobs in the different phases of construction and commissioning.

In technical terms, the plant’s objective is to produce green hydrogen for self-consumption at Repsol’s refinery in the Escombreras Valley, thus optimizing its energy efficiency and reducing its carbon footprint. This initiative is part of Repsol’s strategy to accelerate the transition to renewable energies and advance in the decarbonization of its operations.

The Cartagena Hydrogen Network project is assisted by the Investment Acceleration Unit (UNAI) of the Instituto de Fomento de la Región de Murcia to speed up the deadlines for the permits and authorizations necessary for its implementation. During the period of design and preparation of projects for the hydrogen production complex, our team has been working to provide Repsol with all the necessary information to focus the project on a scenario of administrative security in its different aspects, both environmental and industrial and urban safety. The UNAI acts as a one-stop-shop for investing companies, providing a rapid response to the different needs that may arise during the conception of their projects.
